I began my career as a sociologist exploring people, places and issues that have great valence for me personally.
Throughout my academic life, beginning with my undergraduate coursework, I have engaged in intellectual work at least partly as a way to better understand my own life. I pursued several fields of inquiry-psychology and religious studies-before coming upon the sociological lens, which provided me with the most satisfying ways of asking questions and seeking answers.
By placing individual experience within larger contexts, and by tracing the linkages between self and society, biography and history, sociology offers a broad perspective in which to understand individuals' lives and the factors that shape us.
