The epigraph of Brown’s famous Narrative brought about an existential question. Or, rather, a plea, that reflected the author’s state of mind:
Is there some chosen curse,
Some hidden thunder in the stores of heaven,
Red with uncommon wrath, to blast the man

The invocation is sublime.
